On Tuesday, October 27, 203 residents of the Villa Vie Odyssey were told at about 6 a.m. to pack their lives and be off the ship by 2 p.m. The “never-ending” cruise — a 3.5-year voyage around the world that began in Belfast in 2024 — was ending in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, because the company said it could no longer afford fuel.

Left aboard: 156 crew members.

Let that sit for a minute. The people who paid six figures for a cabin got eight hours and a shuttle. The people who served their meals, cleaned their rooms, and kept the ship running got left on it — residents say crew had gone unpaid for around 45 days, and passengers had started fundraising for them. The company disputes the unpaid claim. Either way, the crew was the last to know and the last taken care of.

I won’t pretend a training course would have saved that ship. It wouldn’t. This is a story about something else, and it’s the reason I work the way I work.

In my years of delivery, I have watched training fail at the same place over and over: the handoff. A vendor delivers the library and leaves. The floor is on its own. The people who actually do the work were never asked what they needed, the people who manage them were never taught how to carry it forward, and six months later everyone wonders why nothing changed.

Villa Vie is that pattern at full scale. Management kept selling the dream — the itinerary kept shrinking, 28% fewer ports than planned, cash calls for fuel, food and laundry service deteriorating — while the operation underneath it came apart. The crew saw it first. The crew always sees it first. They are the ones standing in the galley when provisions don’t arrive and standing in front of guests when the port call is canceled. When leadership isn’t embedded in the operation’s reality, the floor knows long before the boardroom does.

Embedding means the opposite of all that. It means learning the operation, the people, and the constraints before recommending anything. It means being in the work with you, not selling to you. I own my clients’ work as if it’s mine — WE, TEAM, US — because that’s the only way the work survives the handoff. If I’m not willing to stand on your floor and understand what your people actually face, I have no business telling you what to train.

This matters even more in bilingual workforce training, and it’s the part most vendors miss entirely. You cannot embed from the outside in a language the floor doesn’t speak. Proximity is the product. If your training partner can’t reach your Spanish-speaking workers where they actually are — in their language, in their real scenarios — then the handoff failure isn’t a risk, it’s a guarantee.

The same week the Odyssey stopped sailing, a very different company absorbed a very different blow: Binance, the crypto exchange, said it had replenished 90% of the roughly $6.3 billion drained in a hack, and that its users would not bear the loss. Two collapses, two answers to the same question — when things break, who pays? In one, the company did. In the other, the crew did.

So here’s the question I’d leave you with, and it’s the question I ask of my own work: is your training partner in the work with you, or selling to you? Because the floor knows the difference. Your people know the difference. And when things get hard — and they always get hard — that difference is everything.

If you lead HR or safety at a frontline employer and want to share what’s working or broken on your side — Reach me at etrainersdotorg@gmail.com or 469-677-8136 — Cheri Thompson, Founder, eTrainers.org.
